As a lover of classical sculpture, myth, and nature, my work celebrates the beauty and complexity of human and animal forms. My sculptural subject matter focuses on anatomy, movement, a touch of the grotesque, and a bit of the surreal. Much of my work is inspired by creature/character design in movies and television, the history of evolution, and creatures from myth and fantasy. Having recently gotten into ceramics, I am increasingly excited about the connection of natural clay bodies to the creation of a seemingly natural being. Creating something “out of the mud” so to speak, reminds me of the myths of creation in many early civilizations. I have connected more with natural clays than other materials I have used in the past because I enjoy the connection with nature and natural clay’s rich history in art , myth, and everyday life. I want my creations to appear mythical and surreal, yet to have a voice and a story relatable to the world, with deep roots in the human experience. Myth throughout time has been used as a way to explain modern narrative, and symbolize our experiences with the environment around us. My work follows the narrative of lived experiences, gives voice to what I see in the world around me, and brings life to what could be.
I am a Denver based sculptor with a focus mainly in figurative works and animal forms. Originally from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. For more than fourteen years after college I stepped away from the arts and lost my dream of becoming a sculptor. Like many did during the Pandemic, I had a sort of Renaissance and began sculpting again, putting myself out into the art world, and never looked back.
Currently I am a full-time artist in Denver, CO, sculpting for specialty exhibitions, doing freelance work, teaching Sculpture and Form at studios around the Denver area, showing work in galleries throughout Colorado, and am an Associate member with the National Sculpture Society.
